Ybor City, Tampa, FL
Nestled in the heart of Ybor City, La Unión is a new apartment development that draws deeply from the neighborhood’s storied past while confidently stepping into the future. Ybor City, once the cigar capital of the world, is a place where culture, craftsmanship, and community have long intersected. The legacy of its iconic cigar factories—defined by their robust brick architecture and enduring presence—serves as both inspiration and foundation for this project.
At the core of La Unión is a bold reinterpretation of traditional brickwork, a material synonymous with Ybor’s industrial heritage. Rather than replicate the past, the design team chose to reimagine brick in a fresh, modern context. Multiple brick sizes are used to emphasize the building’s base and vertical columns, while varying thicknesses introduce a tactile sense of movement and visual intrigue across the façade. This nuanced approach creates a dialogue between light and shadow, echoing the craftsmanship of the past with a distinctly contemporary voice.

The use of larger-scale brick components not only reinforces the building’s modern identity but also delivered significant cost efficiencies. These elements are integrated with strategic setbacks, recessed balconies, and cantilevered terraces, offering residents layered, dynamic living spaces that blend indoor comfort with outdoor vibrancy.
A physical bridge connects the project’s two buildings—one fully within the historic district and the other just beyond—symbolizing the union of old and new. This gesture is more than functional; it’s a metaphor for the project’s mission: to bridge Ybor’s deep-rooted heritage with its evolving urban future.

In a deliberate departure from the area’s traditional red brick palette, La Unión introduces blond and black brick tones. These colors mark a transition to modernity, while still feeling grounded in the neighborhood’s architectural DNA. The result is a façade that feels both familiar and forward-thinking—rooted in Ybor’s past, yet unmistakably of its time.
